Volunteering with turtles
Emma Bartle wanted to do something
different during her summer holidays.
She decided to join a volunteer for free on an animal conservation project in
another country. There was a wide range of things to do. Eventually, after
thinking about it a lot, she made up
her mind: she would go to Turkey to help protect the turtles there.
Emma and the other volunteers
stayed in a small hotel right next to the sea. ‘From my room, I could see
over the beach,’ says Emma. ‘I expected to see the turtles but I couldn’t. It
didn’t really matter because
there were lots of other things
to look at.
On the first evening, the
volunteers met for dinner. Emma started talking to David Burnes, the
permanent leader of the group, who lived nearby. ‘He provided a lot of
information about the turtles. Most of
it I read in my guidebook on the way to Turkey, but it was still interesting
and I couldn’t wait to start
volunteering,’ Emma says.
Emma spent the week at the rescue
centre, looking after injured adult turtles and baby turtles. ‘After they’re
born, the babies have to reach the sea during the night,’ David explained.
‘If they don’t get there, their safety is threatened by bigger animals. So,
the volunteers collect any babies which are still on the beach early in the
morning, look after them at the centre all day and put them in the sea when
night comes again.
‘I was exhausted at the end of
each day,’ says Emma. ‘I fell asleep as soon as I got to bed – and then it
seemed like the alarm went off again straight away! It was brilliant, though.
I really felt like I was helping and I made some good friends. I wouldn’t
think of doing anything else but coming back here in my next break from
college!’

How
the vultures became victims
In the early 1990s, something began
to happen to India’s vultures. Once, tens of millions of these birds filled the skies. Then, suddenly, they began to die out,
victims of an unknown killer. In less than a decade, the three most common
Indian vulture species declined by more than 95 per cent. The Oriental
white-backed vulture population – once the most common large 1bird
of prey in the world – fell by an incredible 99.9 per cent. It was one of the
fastest population decreases of any bird species in history.
Scientists eventually found the cause of the decline
was a pain-killing drug called diclofenac, which was used
to treat sick livestock. Although safe for cows, it kills vultures. Any
vulture feeding on the 2flesh of a cow treated with diclofenac
soon becomes ill. Millions of vultures died as a result. To stop the decline,
India’s government banned the drug’s use on animals in 2006. Today, the
country’s vulture decline is slowing.

Hamka
was one of Indonesia’s most prolific writers on Islamic religious subjects, who also produced
some works of literary art. Hamka (the name is an abbreviation of Hadji Abdul
Malik Karim Amrullah) was born in 1908 in Manindjau (West Sumatra), the son
of Dr Abdul Karim Amrullah, who
was a famous Moslem reformist leader from Minangkabau.
At the age of sixteen he left Minangkabau and went to
Java to study. Later on he went abroad, to Mecca and various Arab countries.
During this period (1935–1940) he wrote five novels altogether; some of them
became very popular, not only in Indonesia but also in Malaya where all five
were re-published after 1960. A collection of short stories from the same
period was published by Balai Pustaka, under the title Didalam Lembah
Kehidupan (In the Valley of Life, 1940). His artistic abilities and
tastes were mainly developed under the influence of modern Arab literature.
This influence is clearly visible in, for example, his first novel, Dibawah

Tanjung Lesung is located on
Java’s most western coast in the district of Pandeglang in the province of
Banten, the Tanjung Lesung resembles the Lesung, which in the local Sundanese
language means the receptacle for rice pounding. Tanjung Lesung is a
developing integrated beach resort for recreation and hotels overlooking Mt
Anak Krakatu, all that is left of the once-mighty Krakatau volcano. This huge
1,500 hectares area of Tanjung Lesung has been developed by the Banten West
Java Tourism Development Corporation (BWJ) since 1996, patterned after the
famed Nusa Dua Resort in Bali. The resort is envisaged to contain top range
hotels and restaurants, a convention hall, a number of golf courses, marina
and theme park.
Today, Tanjung Lesung offers a
perfect place to lay back and immerse oneself in the beauty of nature found
along the vast stretch of soft white sandy beaches, clear and calm blue
waters, and fresh tropical breezes. The 15 km shoreline is the perfect place
for various beach activities such as beach volley, beach football, or just
lie down under the indulging sunshine.
